Today marks the 30th anniversary of DOOM. The classic first‑person shooter remains popular among gamers and enthusiasts and has become a staple of media culture. Its soundtrack is performed by orchestras, Easter‑egg references appear in other games, and ports continue to appear on increasingly unexpected devices. Over the years, the game has maintained a strong player base—so much so that Bill Gates used it to demonstrate the gaming capabilities of Windows 95, though the port was not optimal. The title runs best on DOS, and Microsoft once considered acquiring id Software in its entirety, but that did not happen.
